Haason Reddick will play even less for the New York Jets than Aaron Rodgers has, if his desire comes true.
Reddick, the Jets acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this offseason, asked for still another trade. Seeking a long-term contract, the Pro Bowl pass rusher has not reported to New York’s training camp.
Rodgers talked about the odd circumstances with reporters on Tuesday before meeting his new teammate in Florham Park.
“There’s always new things in the league,” Rodgers stated via ESPN’s Cimini. “I have been around twenty years and have seen plenty. Since we know what it’s like to be a player, I believe that as players we always first side with the other player.”
After being moved to New York, Rodgers claimed he wrote Reddick some notes. Though he would respect the 29-year-old’s decisions, the MVP quarterback judged it “possible” and will get in touch to Reddick.
“We clearly would want him here, but we don’t criticize him for trying to do what’s best for him,” he said. “Based on how exciting this will be, I believe a jet would be ideal for him. Still, he has to make the greatest choice for his family and himself.”
During a three-week holdout, Reddick formally asked for a trade; the Jets maintained they have no intention of trading him. He will keep being penalized up to $50,000 for every day of camp missed.
Head coach Robert Saleh of Jets emphasized that Reddick’s contract issue doesn’t divert the team’s focus.
“It is what it is,” Salesh remarked. “I’m going to concentrate on the folks here.”
